Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

So today, I go out and buy a new outfit for the birthday celebration today, for me and my sister. Christene (my best friend) will come over, and my sister's friend Vicki will, and we'll eat at Chile's and have a blast. Well, long story short, my parents and I got into a nasty fight. But we settled it, and had a blast at dinner. Christene sang with her angelic voice I do so adore. And then, we came home...and my parents let me open my birthday present. A laptop. HP Pavilion ze4500, to be exact. I felt...oh man, at first I felt like I was in a dream. Like this couldn't possibly be real. Then I felt like the crap beneath the toliet bowl; I mean, I was pretty bratty this afternoon, pretty ungrateful, and pretty bitter about our "new financial situation". And yet..my parents scrimped and saved to buy me a brand new laptop. For college.
So that's where I'm broadcasting from now.
I wish English had a strong word than 'thank you'. It seems so inadequate.

gullible, oh so gullible, so gullible toniiiight...

It was like something out of a movie: the icing on a really horrible night at work. Like so many things in my life, looking back, I laugh.

First off, last night I was the only waitress at work...they recruited some guy from the kitchen to help handle the tables, but for the most part it was me. Alone. Workin' my butt off in my spiffy new cargo jeans. Then I come home, avoid my father, and plop down as per routine before my humming computer. Suprise suprise < /sarcasm>, Steve, Ami and Aaron are online. Things are going fine, if not a little on the quiet side, when suddenly Steve explodes! The next thing I know, he and Ami are shouting at each other, Ami's threatening to leave CAA, and Aaron's trying to IM me something about "just say they're both fired". At this point, I'm in tears, thinking "oh my God, what's happening."

Turns out it was all a joke engineered to see if they could make their sweet, trusting Texan believe they were fighting bitterly. Naivete, you are my crown. Innocence, you are my sceptre. But aggrivation, you were my gauntlet that night. Now, of course, now I just laugh and think, wow, I spent almost a year building up my credibility as a mature, intelligent almost-17-year-old and in two minutes, we're all laughing at my own disbelief. Although, to their credit, they did feel horrible about making me cry (as well they should!). Man, just think what march will hold.

Movies, movies, movies...

I saw Matrix Revolutions (and right before we left, Reloaded) today. And sitting in that dark theater, heart racing, waiting for the big moment, I saw a lot of good trailers. Here's my list of movies to see soon:
* Troy: DUDE! Anyone who knows me knows why I'm excited. It's TROY! Sweeeeeeeet!
* The Alamo: Texas. History. What's not to love? I love movies like this. In fact, I wanna work on one like it someday.
* Lord of the Rings- Return of the King: Who in this world doesn't want to see this movie? Aragorn, my love!
* Timeline: I love time travel movies, no matter how cheesy they are

You'll notice a lot of those movies fit into the historical fiction type category, with movies like "Braveheart" and "The Patriot". Truth is, that's my favorite genre...and if I get to work on a film dealing with that sort of category, my life will be complete. ^^

"Is there anyone out there?"

Wow, been a long time since I've updated. I apologize...the flu really hit me hard. And considering my..."condition", me getting sick is very dangerous. I can end up in the hospital. And I had 5/6 tests last week, so I was really paranoid about not getting it. Well, God had other plans I guess.
Although, yeah I may have endangered my exemptions, and yeah, I have a ton of make up work to do (missed Thursday AND Friday) but in a way, I was thankful I got sick. It's been a really long time since I felt God's presence wrap around me like he did Thursday. That warm spirit that reminds me of who I am in Christ and why I believe. Because He IS real, that kind of presence can't be faked. And well, in the words of Pascal:
"Better to be a Christian and be wrong, and therefore lose nothing, than not to be a Christian and be right, and lose everything." Although yeah, there's so much more to it than that, but I happen to like that quote.

Anyway, I finished fruits basket today! Yay! I want the manga for christmas or my birthday (which is in...31 days. Wahoo!)

Busy busy...and yet...
I feel so dispassionate lately.
I spent most of my afternoon today attempting to go off campus and play photographer for the newspaper. Then I played editor. Now I'm playing diligent student for government.
I don't know what's happened to me, but I realized in Latin that I frankly don't care anymore. Mrs. Barrett insinuated that I hadn't planned anything for latin in a while...which, rather hurt. I'm a lousy president. I'm a lousy editor. I walked down the halls of the sophomore campus today and thought, what's happened to me? I used to be so passionate about life, excited about living...and now...the spark is gone. I just live day to day because I have nothing better to do, really.
Worst of all, I'm spiritually dissatisfied. I can't even hear the phrase "God of all comfort" without wincing or mentally lashing out. My faith has been leeched out, slowly, drop by drop as my world crumbles around me. The worst part is, I knew this would happen. As a Christian, we're taught all the time that a faith that can't stand tribulation is no faith at all. Well, what does that make me? A dispassionate, dissatisfied, hurting Christian. Paradoxial terms? You tell me. I have tried every known method to get closer to God, from waking up early to reading devotionals to...and none of it works. I believe God exists, alright, and my soul doeth tremble before him. But I just can't...reach...Him...which makes little if any sense with verses like "draw near to me and I will draw near to you".
O passion, where have you flown?

Travelocity!

It's offical. I'm going to Maine over spring break. I called Ami friday when I bought the ticket...ended up spending like, 20 minutes on the phone. I leave March 6, Saturday morning, come back March 10, Wednesday night. I'm sooooo excited. Can't stop thinking about how much fun it's gonna be. I guess it's hard to explain, but I'm just psyched about this trip. Especially since I'll probably be staying with Steve and his family at their lakehouse. Before any of you freak out, I completely trust Steve 110%...he's my best friend. Closer than my best friend. He'd never try to do anything to me, and I think when a dude is dumped by his girlfriend of X many years TWICE for not sleeping with her, that tells me he's trustworthy. But it'll be a blast to see Ami and Aaron and Becca and Nick too. And of course, Mrs. Baumgardner, my second mama.
Shooby's in Italy now...I hope he's enjoying it. Wherever you are, Shooby, we love you! Come home soon!
In other news, I was sent home from work early tonight. Blah. Sick = not cool.

So good to pause and catch up on friends. Christene came and visited me today; we wandered around the high school and joked and laughed and prayed together like it had only been 4 days and not 4 months since we've seen each other. I love being near Christene; she's kinda like the wacky sister I don't have (example: we drive from PHS to Gringo's going the Looooooooong way. Why? "I went that way to see if you'd follow me.") She got me into Boondock Saints and art and bass guitar. We make each other laugh and, to borrow from Paul, edify each other. I come away feeling so strengthened. And of course, we make beautiful music together...well, at least the one song we wrote together came out wonderfully.
It's so weird how Chris and I just...whap! Stuck together. I knew her freshman year: she sat on the other side of Moreau's class and was the kind of gangsta'-ish thug that made in fun of dorks like me. Sophomore year I sat in front of her in Comer's English 2...kinda talked. Junior year...junior year we saw something in the other that just attracted us like drunk moths to a tiki torch. We sat next to each other in Latin 3 and US history...and just...I can't describe it. We became inseperable. I guess that's what happens when you eat lunch together every day for a few years. But alas, she graduated early...and so, life goes on in her memory. Well, and she IM's me sometimes. ^^

Oh, this cracked me up. Know my little green and gold honda civic? Chris has a Toyota Tundra the exact same color/paint scheme. I told her we need to take pics in front of our matching cars. Lol.

Poetic Justice- A Short Story in Three Vignettes

Daniel McAlister was well aware of the fact he was feeding the stereotypical lawyer image: leaning back in his comfortable, cushioned chair behind a stack of paperwork as tall as his thin frame, balancing a pen on his upper lip.
A Christian lawyer—“non sequitur terms”, he’d been reminded by both groups too many times —he was determined to only defend those he could do so without moral qualms.
Which is why he had many days like today with no food at home or in his lunch break.
“When you’ve finished pondering that fascinating pencil Danny boy, I’ve got a case for you.” Standing in the doorframe like the descendent of Tracer Bullet with only half of his oxford shirt tucked in was Ken Windsor, Daniel’s often cynical partner.
“Lay it on me.”
Ken half tossed a manila folder onto Daniel’s desk.
”This one’s so clear cut I’m giving it to you outta charity for that rather loud empty stomach of yours. Even your conscious can’t refuse this one,” Ken continued his off-sides commentary as Daniel scanned the file.
“Murder. The chief suspect is a convicted pedaphilic rapist. Left hard evidence at the scene. I guess it’s what you’d call a miracle.”
”It is rather rare,” Daniel conceded.
“Rare ain’t the word. I’m still wondering why this is even going to court.”
”Well where is your ‘hard evidence’ anyway?” Daniel asked, flipping the paper clipped stack shut.
“Down in our Houston crime lab for confirmed proof.”
”So it’s not so hard after all.”
Ken laughed. “Danny babe, the judges would have to be blind to refuse it. This is just formalities.” Ken smiled his crooked grin—reminiscent of Harrison Ford, but try telling him that—and meandered down the office hallway.
“You owe me big for this one, McAlister,” Ken called over his shoulder. “Maybe you can buy me dinner sometime.”

II

“You ain’t gonna believe this.”
Daniel looked up from his sleek Dell computer behind ash gray glasses. He nearly commented on how un-proffessional ‘ain’t’ was, but the look in Ken’s eyes told him to let it slide.
“Read it and weep,” Ken said darkly, letting fly a copy of the Houston Chronicle.
”Crime Lab Closed,” Daniel murmured, reading the headlines. “Oh no. Don’t tell me…”
”Oh yes, ‘fraid so. And that murder case with the infalliable evidence? One of the first to go down with the ship. Been thrown out.”
“What?! How did this happen?”
“According to this,” Ken’s finger pressed hard against the newsprint. “Someone in Academia was handing out diplomas to Forensic Investigators without only half the work.”
“You’re kidding.”
”Wish I was Danny.”
Daniel took off his glasses and shook his head. Of all the cases, of all the labs…well, if he were truly in the right, then divine justice would be served, right?

III

“Order! Order!” The stony judge pounded her gavel fiercely as the jury filed into the courtroom. “I’ll have order in my court!”
Daniel fidgeted with his tie. He’d been so confident in the initial hearings and proceedings, but when it came down to it, the judge and jury more resembled the Spanish Inquisition than an democratic institution: unmovable and pre-determined.
“Do you have a verdict?” The chill in the judge’s voice lifted McAlister’s spirits. Surely the sobriety merited a just, fair solution. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the defendant lower his head.
“We do, your honor. We find the defendant not guilty—“
”What?!” Daniel exploded, sending papers flying off his table as he jumped to his feet.”On what grounds?!”
The judge leveled her gavel and glared at him. “Sit, Mr. McAlister, or I’ll have you thrown out of my court.”
”On grounds of insufficient evidence,” quietly continued the juror.
”But the evidence presented clearly—“
“The evidence presented, Mr. McAlister, was found to be tested by a falliable lab, and therefore, insubstantiated.”
”So they read that article too,” whispered Ken behind him.
”Court adjourned,” pronounced the judge.
Daniel gathered his things, pausing only to apologize to the plaintiff and family. The tears in their eyes pricked him deeply.
God, he thought, walking with leaden feet out of the court. How? Why? It was so plain, so clear!
As if by answer to his half-finished prayer, Daniel heard the familiar pandemonium of journalists. They swarmed the defendant and bobbed microphones in his face.
”Mr. Milton, how do you feel now?”
The cleared man looked at the boisterous reporter with emotionless brown eyes.
”How does every sinner feel when they are reminded of Hell?”
”But you’ve been cleared of all charges! Sir, how can you say such a thing?”
Milton looked straight at Daniel while he answered.
”There’s more than one price to pay for stuff like this. I’m not perfect, and God and I both know it.”
”So you’re upset your reputation has been ruined?” The reporter continued. Milton half-smiled.
”Guess you could say that,” he murmured insincerely.
Comments, critiques, thoughts, interviews and chocolate appriciated, as always.

so are you guys enjoying your lunchtime posts without me? Bet Em's happy she doesn't have to go walk down to the nurse (you know that woman refused to believe me?! argh, long story) , but perhaps sad she has no one to go get water with. Is Amanda Farris watching Friends again? Tell Miss Swenson I said hi, and thanks for letting me leave. Mmmm, vicoden. I've been asleep since I got home; this is my "lunch" break. Vive la mash potatoes and meatloaf (yes, mixed, Anna). After this I take about 6 more pills, and more sleep!

Miss you guys. <3 Ash the Wisdom-less one

What did I do to deserve such a loving family?
Mom has gone out of her way countless times to make sure me and my sore jaws are very comfortable. She made a chart of all the medication I have to take. She bought me baby food (plums! Wahoo!), pudding, apple sauce, yogurt and lots of soup. She checks on me every few hours. And when I got sick last night and almost fainted, she came and slept in my room and would wake up all night long to change my ice packs so my face wouldn't swell. She typed an email to Steve letting him know what happened and sending my love. She cleaned my room. My brother washed my car for no apparhent reason. Susie gave up her room so I could watch Gladiator by myself. Susie keeps leaving me notes that I'm such a great sister (the worst part is, I'm rarely a decent sister to her at all...she brings out my sharpest temper). My dad offered to pick me up a magazine at the store.
When mom came and woke me up and showed me my clean room and offered some more soup...I wanted to cry.
I just...I don't know what on Earth I did to deserve such wonderful love. I mean, most of the time I'm cynical, selfish, and not very easy to get along with when it comes to my family. I have my own world, my own agenda, my own time-table with little room for them. I'm standoffish and a loner with a too-quick temper. And yet....they did this for me. And I'm struggling to comprehend why or how.

And I'm so getting my mother a box of chocolates. She deserves it....

I need to have surgery more often.

oh, you sex-driven youth

"An online survey of 250 women and 250 men provided the following results:
• Whistle for a cab — 3%
• Kiss on the hand — 3%
• Peck on the cheek — 16%
• Peck on the lips — 22%
• Open mouth kiss — 25%
• Nibble on the neck — 6%
• Wake up kiss ... the next morning — 25%
...
We learned that there's a one-in-four chance you'll do some, um, other stuff. Frankly, this is the number that surprised us the most. We knew that many couples coupled up right off the bat — but one out of four? Wow."
--from MSN Dating & Personal section.

Usually I don't pay attention to those little "points to ponder" stories that pop up after you send an email (in my case, to Steve telling him about my surgery being moved to today and how I single-handedly wiped a gas pump out of commission before noon), but this one said "Should you kiss on a first date?". So, voila. 1/4th of the dating population "gets some" on a first date...that's so revolting.

Ironically, I'm taking a break from the public opinion/polling section of my government book.

"continuing feelings of love!"..."the British chippie!"

(sorry, Friends is playing)
I refuse to comment on the "boooooooox" bomb threat this morning. Ah, homecoming. I also refuse to comment on the subtle loneliness and aching in me on days like this.

I love my pants! I feel sexy in them. Sexy, sexy pants.

I will talk about Fruits Basket, which is possibly the bestest show evah. I finished episode 8 this morning; and Hatori's story made me cry. Although, I have a few questions I thought of this morning on the way to school:
1. Why didn't Hatori have his father erase his memory after Kana? Other than the obvious angsty plotline, I mean, wouldn't that have helped him, so he wouldn't have to be all frozen snow and suffering? On the other hand, maybe he refused it because he wanted to remember the love he had with Kana. But still, call me selfish, but I'd have opted to take the memory-erase rather than suffer with those memories.
2. Ok, this is kind of weird, but do people who marry into the Sohma family get that same immunity that Sohma members have? Like, example, would Mrs. Shugure be able to hug Shugure without that little "side effect"? And if not...wouldn't that make future Sohmas a little hard to produce?
I always think of things like this when I watch new titles. Kinda weird, kinda geeky, I know. But *shrug*. I really, really love Fruits Basket.

Mmmm...what else. Steve finally mailed my package! Yay! ^^ Ok, I'm going to check the other entries and comment later. Ciao, my audience, and remember, when all else fails, I'll die and make it better.

Mercutio speaks!

"A plague o' both your houses! I am sped.
Is he gone, and hath nothing?"

Mercutio was always one of my favorite characters. Anna and Emily will understand this analogy. So according to the laws of Shakespeare, if I die, both the "feuding houses" (namely Threlkeld and Hamlett) and the star-cross'd lovers (need I name them) will all resolve and be happy. Or dead.
